China is upping bets on private space companies, leading among countries expanding market share in the nascent industry during the third quarter, according a report from Space Angels, an investing firm specializing in private space ventures.

Defense behemoth China North Industries Group Corp, or Norinco Group (CNIGC) and space giant China Aerospace Science & Technology Corp (CASC) are taking up lots of space for the unveiling of new products at Airshow China beginning of November. Their static-dynamic presentations of modern weaponry systems and a new-generation launch vehicle rocket family will add to the depth of the China International Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition. The high-powered lineup promises further breakthroughs at the show's 12th edition from 6 to 11 November in Jinwan District, Zhuhai.

China's Tianqin satellite project has made breakthroughs in the key technologies to detect gravitational waves, the project's leader Luo Jun, a physicist at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, told the audience at the Xiangshan Science Conference in Guangzhou. In-orbit verification can start as progress has been made on inertial sensing, laser interferometry, the drag-free control system and satellite platform.

Seeking a greater role in Chinese projects, the University of Hong Kong is pumping HK$10 million (US$1.28 million) into building a new space research laboratory at University of Hong Kong Zhejiang Institute of Research and Innovation (HKU-ZIRI) near Hangzhou in Zhejiang province of China's mainland. It is also working with partners on a 50 million yuan (US$7.28 million) microsatellite there. The microsatellite is set for lift-off next year.

Two remote sensing satellites were successfully sent into space on 9 October from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China. The satellites, both part of the Yaogan-32 family, were launched by a Long March-2C rocket with an attached upper stage at 10:43 a.m. Beijing time. The satellites have entered their planned orbits and will be used for electromagnetic environment surveys and other related technology tests.
