The Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and the University of Calgary, along with other partners, announced that they will develop Canada's contribution to the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) mission. The mission is a collaboration between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to study space weather, the phenomenon that causes the northern lights but can also cause disruptions and damage to technology.

On 25 July at (around) 13:00 h Beijing Time, i-Space successfully launched its Hyperbolic 1 (SQX-1 Y1) solid-propellant carrier rocket from a launchpad at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre. Nearly 15 minutes after take-off, the 25-meter-tall rocket succeeded in deploying two satellites - one from CASIC and the other from the Beijing Institute of Technology - into a 300 km low-Earth orbit.

Yu Jia, China project manager of the Germany-developed LND instrument onboard Chang'e 4 spoke about the approach for cooperation throughout the project. The LND combines China's efficiency with Germany's process design capability and success could not be achieved without either. The two sides agreed to cooperate in August 2016 and the payload was fully delivered by March 2017 to meet the scheduled launch time by the end of 2018. These eight months set a speed record in German payload development, the China Project Manager Yu said. LND's data will help to assess and prepare for future human activities on the Moon.

"Sending Chinese people to the Moon won't be too much of a problem," Wu Weiren, CLEP's Chief Designer and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said at a press conference ahead of the 4th International Conference on Lunar and Deep Space Exploration held in Zhuhai on 22 July. Wu declined to reveal a detailed schedule for a manned mission to the Moon.

Landspace's TQ-12 liquid oxygen-methane engine has completed a full-thrust test run with a duration of 100 seconds. Key technical parameters have reached the design requirements and further verified the product's quality and structural reliability, said Ge Minghe, General Manager of the R&D department of LandSpace. TQ-12 is independently developed by LandSpace and has the third-highest thrust level among liquid oxygen-methane engines globally.

The Xi'an Satellite Control Center has completed a health check of more than 10 BeiDou-2 navigation satellites. A self-developed data service system enables the staff members to spend just five minutes finishing the examination, which originally required 10 hours. It has improved the efficiency of data analysis and laid a foundation for diagnosis, prediction and health checks of satellites.
