China is stepping up development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to support its space programs, Zhang Duzhou, a member of the Chinese Association of Automation and the Chinese Society of Astronautics, told a space conference in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. Experts are now developing AI technologies in visual image recognition, visual tracking, rendezvous and docking, navigation and positioning, mission planning and spacecraft fault diagnosis.
With AI, spacecraft could acquire the abilities of self-learning, autonomous perception and planning and self-decision, thus lowering the cost of operation and increasing the quality, safety, reliability and flexibility of space missions.

China aims to recover the first stage of the Long March 8 carrier rocket, which is still under development and is expected to make its maiden flight around 2021, said Long Lehao, Chief Designer at the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology during a National Space Day conference in Harbin, capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province. The Long March-8 rocket will have two stages and two boosters: the first stage and boosters are expected to be retrieved through vertical landing

On 26 April, China launched a new company focusing on the scale-production of satellites in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province. The newly established CASIC Space Engineering Development Co. is a subsidiary of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). The company has a complete research and development capacity for the design of satellites, with core technologies in the structure and thermal control of satellites, according to Lyu Dongming, president with the company. At the facility, a new type of space cargo transport aircraft is under development and will complete its maiden flight in 2019. Technologies such as space inflatable deployment, flexible heat shielding and composite materials, will be used. New types of composite material cabins, and new types of environmental control and life support technology will be applied to achieve products that offer support for missions such as return transport of space cargo, and delivery and recovery of goods.

ON 26 April, China sent five Zhuhai-1 remote sensing satellites into space on a single carrier rocket. The Long March-11 carrier rocket lifted off from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 12:42 BJT. The launch was the 272nd flight mission for the Long March series of carrier rockets. Zhuhai-1 is a commercial remote sensing satellite constellation invested in by Zhuhai Orbita Aerospace Science and Technology Co. It will provide data services for areas including agriculture, land and water resources, environmental protection and transport.
