Shoulder-length hair, black leather jacket, arms across her chest, a faint smile, Xu Ying graces the cover of a youth magazine. A rock star? No, Xu, 36, is a scientist. Xu leads a team at China's prime natural sciences research institute in developing the ground system and augmentation technology of China's BeiDou satellites.

"Trust me, if you choose to use China-developed Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), you could quickly be rescued when an accident happens, while others using GPS technology will still be waiting for help," said Xu Ying, a researcher from the Academy of Opto-Electronics (AOE) at the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), in an interview with Chinese newspaper China Youth Daily.

The President of the Chinese academy of Sciences, Bai Chunli, told media outlet Sputnik that he had discussed with the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), Alexander Sergeev, space cooperation and cooperation on Arctic exploration. A RAS delegation, headed by Sergeev, is currently on a working visit to China, where it will take part in the Chinese-Russian symposium on deep-water exploration of world's oceans, set to be held on 25 and 26 March.

Pan Jianwei, a renowned Chinese physicist and professor at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) won the 2019 R. W. Wood Prize presented by the Optical Society of America (OSA), the university said on 22 March. It is the first time that a Chinese scientist has won the prize with a local research project since the award was established in 1975.

Maritime monitoring vessel Yuanwang 5 docked at a port in east China's Jiangsu Province on 22 March, after finishing its observation and control task of communication satellite ChinaSat 6C on the Pacific Ocean. ChinaSat 6C was sent into orbit on 10 March from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

On 22 March 2019, the Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer, or SMILE, a China-ESA joint mission, was adopted for implementation by the European Space Agency (ESA). The adoption, as a milestone event, signifies the kick-off of the engineering phase of the joint scientific mission, which aims to study the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth magnetosphere. The mission will be launched in 2023 and will be operated in orbit for 3 years.

The Gaofen 5 and Gaofen 6 satellites, were officially put into service on 21 March after completing in-orbit tests. During the tests, the two satellites provided precise data on environmental monitoring, natural resources and natural disasters, according to China's State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND) and China's National Space Administration (CNSA). Both satellites will form a constellation with other Gaofen satellites in orbit.
